GETTING MARRIED? INSIST ON PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY!

Image
So what does it mean to get married? Hopefully, a lifetime commitment with fantastic benefits to bride and groom that hopefully leads to children and family ....... These are lifetime memories, which is why it is so important to preserve them. That's why it is so important to book a photographer and, if applicable, a videographer who knows what they are doing. There are many wannabees who offer services and who sport low end digital cameras and who offer services at bargain basement prices, yet don't know the first thing about photography and working with light. Often they are not so good at working with people either. For a start, ask your photographer what their backup plan is if their equipment fails. Do they carry a spare camera or two and spare lenses? Ask your prospective wedding photographer what professional bodies they belong to, what their qualifications are and what their investment is in photography.  Its also advisable to check how your photographer is wi...

As featured in the Peoples' Post - 27 March 2012 Hanging out of the side of a helicopter taking photos for a client, or trying to get a steady pic from the window of a car while game spotting, you need to operate your camera at higher shutter speed.  School in Cape Town taken from a helicopter at 900 feet  Most cameras have settings that allow control of exposure time or shutter speed. This is the length of time, in thousands of a second.e.g. a common speed of 125 means one 125 th of a second, or 1000 means one 1000 th of a second. Do not confuse this with sensor or ISO speed, the direct analogy of film speed. They are however complementary. Advanced cameras allow the exposure to be directly set, but even Others, including basic digicams have a ‘fast’ or sports setting to be used when you want to freeze the action. Check yours out, often denoted by a running man icon. Use the “sports” setting when you want to freeze the action or at any tim...

PHOTOGRAPHY BY AIR

What a great month of February we have just had. Ideal weather. The photograph below was taken at about 2 000 feet from a very small helicopter, while on assignment for an industrial client. Here is Table Mountain, one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World, seen from above the tourist haven of Cape Town, South Africa.

THE SOFTER SIDE OF PICS

Published in the Peoples' Post - 27 September Having a digital camera without a computer is like being in an or orchestra without a violinist. Although it is possible to get photos printed directly from your camera’s memory card at the photo shop, you miss out on a world of opportunities by not having a computer with some basic image editing software installed. Most digital cameras come with some type of image editing software, but there are also a number of great free packages available via the internet. All you need to do is download them, assuming you have a reasonable internet connection. There is a big difference between comprehensive image editing software suites such as Photoshop CS and simple image manipulation software such as Irfanview. The most basic programme should allow you to make minor adjustments to the light levels in the photo, convert to grey tones, crop the image, rotate it, resize it and save it to a new filename. You can download Irfanview free at ...
