Honeycomb spaces

Image
T he refurbished Grain Silo at Cape Town's V&A Waterfront is full of striking 'interstitial' spaces where grain used to be stored but now have been converted into elements of the though provoking Zeitz Mocaa (Museum of Contemporary African Art). These spaces have been polished by master polishers of their trade and provide the camera with some interesting eye candy.

AMAZING NEW ART MUSEUM OPENS IN CAPE TOWN AT THE V&A WATERFRONT

Image
As THE EDITOR OF  TO Build magazine , I  was one of an elite group of magazine editors and international journalists to be invited to cover the developers’ gala evening, the official press launch and the grand opening ceremony and ribbon cutting a week later.        With the opening of the Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) in the second half of September, South Africa entered the super league of countries that host contemporary art collections from across a continent and its diaspora globally, all protected by Category A climate control inside its 90 galleries. The technology has been endorsed by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and is used in internationally renowned galleries such as Pompidou Metz, Pulitzer and Paul Klee. After four years of repurposing and construction, the V&A Waterfront’s R500-million project to transform the historic grain silo into the world’s largest museum dedicated to...

London's thriving business district

Image
A recently walking tour around the City of London in the vicinity of the Aldgate and Bishopsgate precincts proved absolutely gob-smacking. London is certainly experiencing unprecedented construction activity and this district is clearly well established as the hub of the financial services industry. Only the major banks are missing, having moved some years prior to the Canary Walk precinct. An article I wrote about Leadenhall for South African building industry annual, SA Building Review , can be viewed here . Here is my photographic overview of the business district.

COOL IN CAPE TOWN. COLDER IN SUTHERLAND.

Image
Interesting pre-dawn shoot at the Southern Africa Large Telescope a the SA Astronomical Observatory near Sutherland. Photo  taken over a 10 minute exposure at 5 mins 20 secs. Shutter button was pressed at approximately 6 a.m. This was about 1 hour 45 minutes prior to sunrise, but the reflected glow from the eastern horizon bounces off the side of the SALT scope.  Later, during the exposure, a vehicle occupied by off-duty astronomers pulled up alongside and spoiled the lower half of the picture with red and orange light from their brake lights and flashers. Fortunately this did not affect the upper area of the image, where the main action is. The lens flare near dead centre however comes from that vehicle. Astronomers posted at SALT and the other SAAO scopes are not only permanent staff but also come from all over the world to do observations and research. SALT is one of only two such facilities in the world. The other unit is at Austin, Texas. Yes - and it was c...
