Here’s how you can be sure you get it right next time.

Resolution

Resolution means the size of the photo in pixels (very simply, these are ‘dots’ of digital information relating to colour and tone) that are expressed in a horizontal and vertical medium. When you multiply the horizontal by the vertical dimension, you get the digital resolution of the image, expressed in megapixels (what you camera ‘takes’). This should NOT be confused with print resolution, which is the dots per inch analogue equivalent of digital resolution. The trade has adopted two slang terms for the presentation of images. They are ‘high res’ and ‘low res’. Be warned that these are subject to misinterpretation.

It is important for digital camera users to grasp the basics of digital image sizing. Should you be sending photos to a newspaper or even a magazine, then a photo taken in JPEG format at medium resolution (around 5 megapixels) is suitable. However, should you need to keep this photo for high quality printing and possible enlargement, it becomes important to shoot at the camera’s maximum digital resolution.

An additional setting available on your digital camera or smartphone is compression or image quality. This is normally selected by setting the camera to take ‘fine or high quality’ or on the other hand, ‘medium or standard’ quality. Some cameras also have a low quality or high compression option. The significance of this setting is as follows:

Low compression means a large file (around 3 megabytes) on your memory storage card but the photo is rendered at highest quality. There is a minimum of digital noise or blurring of detail.

High compression means a smaller sized file (around 1 megabyte) on memory storage, but the image quality is poorest.

High compression files further deteriorate in quality if they are edited on the computer using a programme such as Gimp or Photoshop Elements. It is a good tip to always take your photos at the highest quality setting, even is taken at a low digital resolution – assuming your camera memory card has available space. Smaller sized files in megabytes are also easier to email, however.

As a very rough guide, many publishers will tell you not to send any photos other than 1 megabyte in size for publishing. This applies to a number of factors but in truth you can get away with a much smaller sized file provided the megapixel size is correct. As an editor, I will publish most file sizes of 500 kilobytes (half a megabyte) – that’s my rule of thumb.

Notice Bentley the Frenchie in both images (same size in height and width). The image at the top is rendered for internet/web usage. The lower image is how that same image would come across in print. Note how the image deteriorates at print resolution, confirming the rule that you cannot send low resolution ‘thumbnail’ images for printing. This is very important when sending a press release with an image to a print magazine.

Other formats

Nowadays many photos are being presented in .PNG (Portable Network Graphics) and not JPEG format. Be aware that this format takes up more disk space for a lower resolution photograph so a .PNG image sent at, say 500 kilobytes (half a meg) is most likely too small to be published in the print medium, whereas a .JPEG file at 500 kilobytes most often is publishable.

I’ll deal with the other (higher) formats of digital imaging, including RAW, in the next article.

So why do photographers refer to pics posted in emails or on the internet as thumbnails? It’s because when printed at standard print resolution, they come out the size of a thumbnail – too small for a magazine or book (unless you have magnifying glass handy!).

Gareth Griffiths - Professional Photographerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04049375021615075847noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6502004813597220795.post-70916951555094443362022-01-27T12:57:00.002+02:002022-01-27T12:57:09.955+02:00STILL TURNING HEADS
My Martial Eagle from Etosha many years ago! INSIST ON PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY!<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">So what does it mean to get married? Hopefully, a lifetime commitment with fantastic benefits to bride and groom that hopefully leads to children and family .......
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">These are lifetime memories, which is why it is so important to preserve them.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">That's why it is so important to book a photographer and, if applicable, a videographer who knows what they are doing. There are many wannabees who offer services and who sport low end digital cameras and who offer services at bargain basement prices, yet don't know the first thing about photography and working with light. Often they are not so good at working with people either.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">For a start, ask your photographer what their backup plan is if their equipment fails. Do they carry a spare camera or two and spare lenses?
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Ask your prospective wedding photographer what professional bodies they belong to, what their qualifications are and what their investment is in photography.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Its also advisable to check how your photographer is with people. Most weddings involve the joining of two families together around the pair who are getting married and so you need a photographer who relates to the older generation - the in-laws if you like - and other guests, also.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">So if you are planning to get married, remember it is the special moments that will provide the memories. You want a professional photographer who knows what they are doing during the ceremony and during the special shoot afterwards - and will be able to suggest the best locations for the bride, groom and wedding party to slip away prior to the reception.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Wedding reception photography after the ceremony and formal couple/family photoshoot is a second consideration to the ceremony itself. So if <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">you have only a tight budget and paying by the hour, <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">rather hire a competent professional to cover the important stages. You can leave the party photography to guests and amateurs, but ensure your lasting memories are professionally and well recorded.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">An organisation such as Safrea, the Southern African Freelancers' Association, has many fine professional photographers as Full Members, who subscribe to a professional code of conduct. These are mostly working photographers who, in addition to providing wedding photography services, work within the media publishing areas such as advertising and editorial photography. Photographers such as these have invested way over R 100 000 in cameras, special lenses and other equipment including IT backup and software.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I'm a senior professional member of Safrea, which gives additional confidence to the client. You can reach Safrea on <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">the site www.safrea.co.za for further information.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">For example, it was better to slightly overexpose your photograph when shooting on film. Due to the high density of layers of photo sensitive chemical in film, that recorded extra detail.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Nowadays with digital, the opposite is true. If you 'blow out' your image by letting too much light past the sensor in a digital camera, the detail is gone - forever.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">However, what you do have today is the availability a lot of 'post production' computer software that allows you to do everything and much more than film processing could do. There is even software available for handheld devices, including smartphones.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We have photography in RAW format today. (<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">See my earlier article on this<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">). Effectively, what RAW does is allow you to re create the whole image you took from a light perspective. It is not a format you can take to the printer. It needs to be developed.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">But for this post production work a great deal of computer software is available at your fingertips. While users of the highly expensive Adobe Photoshop CS suite are dedicated and hard core, the great technology available in Photoshop is also distilled down in a number of much cheaper packages that are uber user-friendly as well. Probably the best of these is Adobe Photoshop Elements, which contains multiple technical 'hand me downs' from Photoshop CS - at a fraction of the price.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The post production phase of photography is split into two components:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Image workflow and archiving software - for example Photoshop Lightroom, an expensive system, and the Organiser software found in Elements. Most of this software allows the user to make various light and colour related adjustments but does not allow the user to apply filters or to alter the photograph beyond that.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The second stage is the full edit. That is where Photoshop CS, and the host of other <span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">image editing software<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"> I mentioned, comes in. This stage allows the user to add or remove people, change the landscape, correct distortion, etc. The classic meaning of a 'Photoshopped' image.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Of course, the final stage is the presentation or publishing of the image - be it on Facebook, as a print, or in a printed book.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I'm a competent user of Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Elements. Together, they meet all my needs as a professional photographer - including weddings or architecture.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Give me a shout if you need some lessons or coaching with these systems. You can improve your photographic results by 100% Up to now, my clients have been very satisfied.

COST: Please discuss your specific requirements with me, but the basic cost is R 1600 for two coaching sessions of approximately two hours duration.
Admittedly, there is not much more to burn, but there remain a few existing hot spots that continue to smolder and emit white smoke. This is not helped by the strong "fresh" South Easterly wind which supplies the embers with copious amounts of oxygen. Gladly, the same wind has assisted in clearing the local air of smoke and ash so our normal clean atmosphere has returned. If only it was not for the grey landscape .....

We are so fortunate that the fire did not spread to our neighbours in Masimpumele and Sun Valley; and also that all of our local farms and businesses survived, thus ensuring continued employment for the people who need it the most.

Today's only negative is that there is a fire approaching from the South. The blaze that started in Cape Point reserve is making its way North, placing Scarborough and surrounding areas at risk. Amazingly, brave volunteers from the Noordhoek crisis centre have volunteered their services to fight the approach of this fire. Here they are, receiving their briefing at the Noordhoek centre from the professional team leaders before setting off South to this new D-Zone late this afternoon.
According to Athos and colleagues at the Crisis Centre, it may not yet be over, but above all panic should be avoided. Keep the Crisis Centre informed. Be sure to put your friends and social media "friends" straight when giving information and encourage people to stay away from the "D-Zone" except when to volunteer. A list of donated items for the centre is still available. Athos can be contacted on 082-606-3726

Athos also confirms that all properties on the De Goede Hoop development survived the fire, which was very bad at the perimeter - as in you could lose sight of your volunteers - barring damage to outhouses and perimeters. I reckon a big vote of thanks owed to those professional fire fighters and volunteers.

The most reliable report we have is that ONE property in the Noordhoek Valley was completely destroyed by the fire, and this due to the hot ash fallout at around midnight last night. Several others suffered limited damage. I will substantiate as soon as possible.

Social media reports of the big fire particularly in the Noordhoek Valley have been rather misleading and possibly contributed to panic rather than helped he situation.
A tweet by @vanhaywood that did little to help matters on Monday:

The tweet was picked up by big tweeters such as @KFM and @CapeTown and retweeted without verfication, even by the Lodge itself, which may have retweeted under some pressure.

However, this was the area looked like, via a photo from the beach taken at about the same time as the tweet:
This is how things played out after the arrival of the "Muizenberg Fire" #capefire late on Sunday 1 March.

Living in the area as I do with my family, my first inkling of the big fire was 01h00 Monday morning when I was woken up by the smell of smoke. The fire was approximately 300 metres away and moving relatively slowly. Having stayed where I do long before the really big fire of the year 2000, I can confirm that the fire of 1 March on moved a lot more slowly.

Noordhoek Manor and surrounding area was advised to evacuate and rightly so due to a large infestation of pine on the property of landowner, SA National Parks, which had re-grown there since the big fire of 2000.

The Noordhoek Crisis Centre was convened at the NGK property near the Farm Village by experienced volunteer, Athos. Athos and others were intimately involved as volunteers in fighting the big fires in year 2000 where they were hosted at the Noordhoek Farm Village by then-owner, Jeremy Wiley.

According to Athos, this morning, 3 March at the Crisis Management Centre, a considerable number of "mistruths have been perpetuated" by large media groups, apparently based on erroneous social media reports. In fact, there was anger among certain of the volunteers interviewed, in this regard (especially about a Facebook message that stated the Lodge has burned to the ground). Admittedly, access to the Far South was severly limited on March 2nd, with huge grid locks on the Main Road Kalk Bay and all the other roads closed. However there is palpable concern in the crisis centre that panic was seeded by, among others, the following reports:

Monkey Valley Resort "was evacuated". According to house front staff there, a conference was moved to a lodge in Simon's Town yesterday owing to reasonable concerns, but the Lodge remained open.

The Lodge - Tuesday morning 09h00. Conference was moved to Simon's Town

Lodge appealed for "urgent assistance". According to Lodge staff and PRO, Jenny, a call was put out this morning for water bombing assistance from fire helicopters. At that stage the fire was still 200 metres away and there were four fire tenders from CCT on patrol immediately above the Lodge on Chapman's peak.

Four houses were burned in Noordhoek. One of them was the "former Chaplin Estate", Noordhoek Estate. In fact, Athos explains that no houses were raised or even burned, although there was some damage to fences and external perimeters.

The Crisis Control Centre "wishes that somebody would have spoken to them first" because the misinformation panicked a number of Beach Road residents, who came to the Centre in alarm. Volunteers were however excellent and a highly efficient operation was set up.
